Abstracts: As a historical accumulation, traditional culture is an indispensable part of the origin and development of modern education. The traditional culture and historical background of an ethnic group, to some degree, will influence on the school performance of its members. Based on an extensive field work among the Tu Yao ethnic group, this paper tries to explore the influence of traditional culture on ethnic schooling, and the relationship between them as well. By a “thick description” of the tradtional culture of the Tu Yao, it also tries to explore the key factors hindering the Tu Yao kids from school success in the perspective of traditional culture.
