* Leukemia is a form of cancer that begins in the blood cells in bone marrow. Under normal circumstance, the blood in mammalian species includes a number of different cell types essential for survival. Erythrocytes transport oxygen. Neutroplil, basophil,esonophil granulocytes and monocytes are essential to host defense against bacteria,fungi, parasites and viruses. T-lymphocytes function as antigen presenting cells. B-lymphocytes and plasma cells are the source of antibodies. All these cell types are called mature hematopoietic cells and derived ultimately from stem cells and progenitors cells in bone marrow. Can you image ? Human bone marrow produces about 6 billion cells per kilogram of body weight. * This slides shows schematically hematopoiesis happen in bone marrow. In General, the hematoploietic cells in bone marrow can be grouped arbitrarily into several categories which include pluripotential stem cell, myeloid stem cell, progenitor cell, immature hematopoietic cells, mature hematopoietic cells. A pluripotential stem cell within the bone marrow continuously divide to form new cells. Some of the new cells remain unchanged as stem cells and have a lifelong capacity for self-renewal. This cells are called pluripotential cells. Theoretically, they have the ability to repopulate long-term hematopoiesis in whole animal. A myeloid or lymphoid stem cell means this single cell has the ability to repopulate myeloid or lymphoid hematopoiesis. Unipotential progenitor cells have a limited capacity for self-renewal and become committed to forming only one type of blood cell line as we have mentioned earlier. * Although stem cells are few in number, composing no more than 3% to 5 percent of all cell in bone marrow, they are the only cells capable of deciding which kind of the progenitor cells they want to be.
