Existing studies in China lack quantitative analyses on site selection of newly-built HSR lines in suburban areas and its impact on land use development around stations. Using 38 HSR sta- tions and their development conditions in surrounding areas in cities along Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway and the Wuhan-Guangzhou High-speed Railway, this paper discusses the impact of a key factor, the distance from HSR stations to central urban area, on land use development around HSR stations. By es- tablishing the distance index, the paper analyzes the characteristics of land use development around sta- tions in different locations, and further establishes the relationships among the development scale in sur- rounding areas, urban scale, and the distance index based on cluster analysis.
