Abstract ABSTRACT Theoptictectuminnonmammalianvertebratessuchasbirdsistheprincipal destinationofretinalganglioncellaxons.Thepresentstudyprovidesthefirst electrophysiologicalevidencefordorsoventralvariationinthereceptivefield propertiesoftectalcellsinpigeons.Accordingtotheirreceptivefieldorganization, visualresponsepropertiesandlaminarlocations,tectalneuronsrecordedinthe presentstudycouldbecategorizedintotwogroups:(1)DL-neuronsinthedorsal, dorso-lateral,lateralandventro-lateraltectumarecharacterizedbyanexcitatory receptivefieldsurroundedbyaninhibitoryreceptivefield.Mostofthemalmost equallyrespondtowhiteandblackobjects,butdonotrespondtoswitch-onand- offofalightspot.(2)VC-neuronsintheventraltectumarecharacterizedbyan excitatoryreceptivefieldalone.Theirresponsestoswitch-onofalightspotandto awhiteobjectaresignificantlystrongerthanthosetolight-offandtoablack object,respectively.DL-neuronsarelocatedintectallayersI-IV,predominantly inlayerII,whereasVC-neuronsaremainlyconcentratedinsublayerHe.The receptivefieldsofVC-neuronsarelocatedwithintherostroventralvisualfield possiblycorrespondingtotheredfieldofthepigeonretina,suggestingthatthey mightbeassociatedwithvisualfood-foragingbehaviors. Thenucleuslentiformismesencephali(nLM)andthenucleusofthebasal opticroot(nBOR)inbirdsareinvolvedinoptokineticnystagmus.Thepresent studyprovidesthefirstelectrophysiologicalevidencethatreversibleblockadeof thepigeonnucleusofthebasalopticrootbylidocainecanchangevisual responsivenessofpretectalneuronsinadirection-dependentway.Somecells changefiringratesinalldirectionsofmotion.Somechangevisualresponsesonly inthepreferreddirections,andtheothersdonotchangetheirresponsiveness duringlidocaine.Thisstudyhasfoundthatvisualneuronsinthenucleusofthe Keywords:Pigeon,Tectofugalpathway,Accessoryopticsystem Abstrac七 basalopticrootwhichpredominantlyprefer
