Ekpo, Alson Been, Sameer Lakha Division of Science and Mathematics Bethune-Cookman College Daytona Beach, FL 32114 E-mail: obengm@ Abstract A three-node cluster-based parallel multiprocessor system was developed using Red Hat linux 7.2 Operating System O/S and Open Source Cluster Applications Resource (OSCAR) software developed by the Open Cluster Group (OCG). The cluster-based system was used to execute parallel application programs to evaluate its performance. For a 512-body application program executed on the three-node cluster-based system, a performance improvement of 39% was realized. It is intended to increase the number of nodes of the cluster to sixteen in the near future. 1. Introduction Brief Survey of Linux Cluster-Based Parallel Computing Systems Cluster-based linux multiprocessor systems are currently used in Industry, Research Laboratories and Educational Institutions. These cluster-based systems are being used in High Performance Computing (HPC) applications, High Availability (HA) applications, Load Balancing applications and in Fault-Tolerance applications [ 1, 2 ]. Available software for building HPC cluster-based linux systems include Open Source Cluster Application Resources ( OSCAR) developed by OCG [ 3 ], Scyclad ( for Beowulf ) [ 4 ] and Open Mosix [ 5 ]. Software for developing cluster-based High Availability linux systems include Kimberlite and Heartbeat. Linux Virtual Server (LVS) is one of the available softwares for building Load Balancing cluster-based linux systems [ 1 ]. Parallel programs executing on cluster-based systems use message passing interfaces such as Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) [ 6 ], Message Passing Interface (MPI / MPICH) [ 7 ], and Spread [ 1 ] to communicate data and information among the executing processes on the different nodes of the cluster.
