索尔贝娄 2.Saul Bellow(1915-2005),as the laureate of Nobel Prize in Literature in 1976,is one of the most celebrated writers of the twentieth-century.As an outstanding Jewish-American writer,Bellow’s works have gained great concern worldwide.Throughout his life time,he has completed a lot of high quality writings,including thirteen novels,a collection of book reviews,a number of short stories,a play and several critical essays on literature.His best-know works include The Victim(1947),The Adventure of Augie March(1953),Seize the Day(1956),Herzog(1956),Mr.Sammler’s Planet(1970)and Humboldt’s Gift(1975). Bellow was born in Lachine,Quebec in 1915,and he was the fourth son of a Russian Jewish immigrant family.Before moving to Chicago with his family,Bellow grew up in a Jewish suburb of Montreal.In 1933,he entered the University of Chicago to study English literature,but later he transferred to the Northwestern University where he converted to study Anthropology and Sociology.Bellow’s multicultural background adds rich thoughts to his works and his outstanding intelligence.As one of the greatest humanistic writers in his time, Bellow has a keen interest in writing the sufferings of humanity.Most of his principal characters are Jews who have a sense of isolation and heroic potential,and they always stand opposite to the passive forces of society.James Atlas says“Saul Bellow is the premier American novelist:the best writer we have in the literary form that has been dominant in the literature of the past hundred years”(405). 《论索尔贝娄 雨王亨德森中的死亡意蕴》 3.
