Application of Mutual Exclusivity in Early Child Vocabulary Learning 1. Introduction This project focuses on one of the constraints: mutual exclusivity. It found that the tendency to select unfamiliar rather than familiar things as the referents of new names, could be reversed in young 2-year-olds, but not older children, by preexposing the unfamiliar objects (Merriman Schuster, 1991).
