Preparing I. Interpreting Skills (口译技能) Read the following presentation about note taking and try to understand the major symbols and abbreviations in note taking. Then complete the following task: You are going to hear a short passage about business presentation. Listen to the passage carefully and note down what you hear, try to use some symbols and abbreviations when you are taking notes. Then interpret your notes in the target language. Decoding Training (V): Notes Taking III（口译笔记III） Symbols and Abbreviations It can be observed in professional notes that symbols and abbreviations account for a large part of note taking. The advantages of most signs and symbols is the fact that they do not belong to any particular language and can be written in one language and read out in another without much effort, as is the case of numerals. Moreover, they save time and space. 1. Symbols from the Alphabet Interpreters often borrow symbols from a variety of alphabets（字母表）. English has 26 letters which the interpreter may use to represent different concepts. For example, “y” for “year”, “m” for “month” and “d” for “day”. 2. Punctuations marks Punctuation marks（标点符号）are also handy in note taking. For example, the colon “:” may be used to indicate “say, speak, tell, declare”; a question mark (?) indicates “question, doubt or ask”; an exclamation mark (!) indicates something important or things that should be paid attention to; the full stop “.” May be used to indicate “viewpoint, opinion, idea”. This symbol can also express different time concepts. When placed before or after a particular time word, it may indicate “last” or “next”.
