The most prized possession for ancient Hawaiians was their names. Names, inoa, were very carefully chosen. Once spoken, an inoa, took on an existence of its own. The more it was spoken, the more influence it carried. The name might tell the story of the place and conditions of birth, reveal the person’s family lineage, or tell of an ancestor’s occupation and particular mana. The inoa could also define social distinction. Names could allude to aumakua, heroic exploits, personal or family qualities of beauty, nobility or evidence of supernatural powers. The name itself was believed to contain mana, personal power. The more it is used, the more it affected the owner and those around them.
