Making a Home for Queer Diasporas 王君琦 國立東華大學英語系 As argued by scholars such as Gayatri Gopinath, the cultural experiences of queer diasporas often reinvent family and national imaginaries when resituating queer subjects within them. For queer immigrant subjects, home is not so much a site of repression to escape as it is a space that needs to be liberated. This particular queer cultural experience of transforming an imprisoned home into a liberal space annotates the dynamics of a Chinese mother’s reluctant acceptance of all her sons’ homosexuality in Rice Rhapsody Kenneth Bi, 2004 . Set in strait-laced Singapore, the radical and sanguine welcoming of queerness in this family tale, however, is facilitated by a fairy-like French teenage girl. Through a close textual analysis of this film, I will examine the role played by this whimsical Western mediator in suturing together queer culture and Chinese diasporic identity.
