Critical texts that did not refer to typological issues were few and far between ,particularly in the second half of the decade. The focus on typology grew out of a critical view of the modern city. On the one hand ,Aldo Rossi and the neo-rationalists from Tendenza applied the notion of type to explain the city and its growth; on the other hand ,critics such as Ernesto Rogers and Alan Colquhoun stressed a view of the concept of type as a mere instrument for the project’s development. All of them were longing for a new theory in architecture that would be capable of explaining the formal and structural continuity of old cities. As they saw it architecture- the city-could neither be considered a work of art nor the result of economic forces. Instead architecture was viewed as the product of the passage of time on certain formal structure. These formal structures were what arch
