PAGE PAGE 3 The effect of Traffic light control on a single intersection (college of Physics and electronics engineering of Guangxi Normal university, Guilin 541004 , Guangxi ,China) A cellular automata model for a single intersection with open boundary conditions is presented.In this model, the vehicles are allowed to turn their directions with a probability. We analyze the traffic flow characteristics of the model and the optimization of green ratio.The simulations under different traffic conditions are given. It can be found that the optimization of green ratio depends on the boundary conditions but independents on the period of traffic light. There is a optimum range of green ratio for fixed boundary condition. The influence of turning probability on traffic flow is also discussed . Turning permission leads to the disappear of congestion on street. Keywords: cellular automata model; optimum green ratio , open boundary ;single intersection Introduction In recent years, traffic jams have become the most difficult problem in city.And we can find that traffic jams always appear near the intersections .At the controlled intersections, traffic lights have important influence upon the traffic flow.If the traffic signal setting is unsuitable, it will not only has destructive effects on traffic.but also endanger the pedestrians.So,how to optimum the traffic setting is the main concern for the traffic engineers and researchers.A number of traffic signal control models have been developed in the past.These models are usually formulated using the languafe of cellular automata(CA).The first model of city traffic was introduced by Biham , Middleton and Levine (BML).This model can predict a sort of phase transition from free-flow to a jammed state,but the model assumptions are too simple to be taken seriously for practical purpose.Later a more serious model of city network was introduced by Chowdhury and Schadschneider (ChSch).This model combines the BML model and Nagel-
