Sister Carrie is such a novel, which provokes attacks on its publication, but finally brings great worldwide fame to Dreiser. Now living in the 21st century, we should approach the novel from a new perspective, opening up possibilities for new readings and new meanings. The protagonists in the novel are living in a changing society at the turn of the 20th century. In this period, America developed at an amazing speed in economy and produced abundant goods. It shifted from a production-oriented society to a consumption-oriented one with the development of industrialization and urbanization. American society put unprecedented emphasis on consumption and propagandized for it with great efforts. The story in the novel took place at the turn of the 20th century when America was experiencing dramatic changes, which would inevitably extend influences on its characters. One of the most important changes the novel illustrates is the transformation of the production- fueled economy to that driven by consumption. Reading Sister Carrie with an eye to these cultural and historical contexts can lead to a shock of recognition, for the novel captures the origins of much that we take for granted as familiar, even natural, aspects of modem life.
