Technology is applied to a variety of applications for a variety of reasons. The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a great way to demonstrate the power of technology in an interactive way. Objectives From this lesson, students should be able to: identify the principles of GPS understand coordinate systems read latitude and longitude coordinates find themselves on a map nagivate between points Relevance GPS is a significant technology that is used is a variety of industries: from research to military to commercial applications. Understanding the principles behind GPS will help develop an understanding of how technology is applied in a variety of applications as well as increase awareness of issues of technology. Standards To be added Benchmarks To be added Knowledge Students should have knowledge of: different navigation techniques coordinate systems, namely latitude and longitude Skills Students should have skills of: deduction reasoning basic orientation Assessment Assessment is being conducted by Leanne Miller and Tina Ziemek. Activity GPS Scavenger Hunt Activity Objective The scavenger hunt will allow students to become familiar with using GPS, navigation, and orientation. Using hand held GPS receivers, students will gather supplies to build ice cream sundaes by visiting certain pre-arranged stations.
