Cities on the Map Owen Dwyer, PhD Assistant Professor of Geography, IUPUI GENI Urban Institute, July 2004 Purpose: In order to better understand the patterns and processes that shape urban development, students will conduct research utilizing a series of topographic maps. Grade Level(s): 9+ Sessions: A minimum of four to five sessions depending upon the students and resources. Objectives: Upon completion of the following series of activities, students will be able to identify map symbols of a topographic map, understand and utilize a topographic map to answer questions, and discuss the patterns and processes involved with urban development based on the information conveyed in a topographic map. Academic Standards: National Geography – How to use maps and other geographic representations, tools and technologies to acquire, process and report information from a spatial perspective. 3. How to analyze the spatial organization of people, places, and environments on Earth’s surface. 4. The physical and human characteristics of places. 12.
