Microsoft Virtual Earth Research Summit 2006 Nov 30-Dec 1, 2006 Microsoft Main Campus, Bldg 27/1810 (Olympic Room)  Foreword It is our great pleasure to host the first Virtual Earth Research Summit at Microsoft. The purpose of this workshop is to bring together university researchers who are doing some of the best research in digital geographics with engineers and researchers at Microsoft who share the same passion. The program includes full-length talks by grant winners of this past year’s Virtual Earth Request for Proposals (RFP) and also by leaders of relevant projects at Microsoft. In addition, there are shorter talks by individual Microsoft researchers and university professors with whom we’d like to increase interaction. Among the participants, we’re fortunate to have seven of the eight RFP winners as confirmed participants, thirteen additional attendees from universities, and around 40 Microsoft employees, representing groups such as Virtual Earth, Microsoft Research, Live Labs, and SQL Server. We’d like to express our deep appreciation to the following people, without which this event would not have been possible: Jennymarie Moran, who took care of and advised us on all logistics for the summit (she did an amazing job even while handicapped with our meddling!); Allison Hoggard, for navigating a painfully tortuous bureaucracy to release the Virtual Earth RFP grants; Erik Jorgensen and Stephen Lawler, who oversee Microsoft’s Virtual Earth efforts, for sponsoring the workshop.
