History Unit of Levi Coffin and the Underground Railroad BY: Chris Drees, Dan Leonard, and Theresa Van Elk Abstract This unit focuses on the Underground Railroad and Levi Coffin. The students will be first introduced to the Underground Railroad and its significance. Then the students will learn about the roles of different people that helped the runaway slaves on the Underground Railroad. Grade: 4th Focus Questions What was the Underground Railroad Who traveled this path and why? Why was the Underground Railroad so dangerous? Why did the runaway slaves need to make it all the way to Canada? Indiana Standard Indicators 4.1.7 Explain the roles of various individuals, groups and movements in the social conflicts leading to the Civil War. (Individuals, Society and Culture) 4.5.6 Investigate the contributions and challenges experienced by people from variouscultural, racial, and religious groups in Indiana during different historical periods by reading biographies, historical accounts, stories, and electronic media, such as CDROMs and Web sites. Assessment Tasks 4.1.7 - The students will write a journal article from the perspective of a runaway slave in the 1840’s. They will include the difficulties of traveling on the Underground Railroad, the method of navigation, and about the people that helped them along the way.
