Despite these values, however, wetlands in South Africa are rapidly being lost or degraded as a result of human activities. Recognizing the importance of these ecosystems, as well as their threatened status in South Africa, the Wetlands Conservation Programme of the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT) has launched a project to compile a national wetland inventory.
