MID TERM PLAN Overview Curriculum Area / Theme Term Unit of work Year group Number of sessions a week Duration Geography Spring 1 An Island Home 2 1 6 x 1hour PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE The children have previously studied their local environment, meaning there is a starting point for making comparisons. They have also looked at photos and maps briefly, and discussed aspects of geography such as transport, jobs etc. most recently during the topic of Barnaby Bear in the Autumn term OPPORTUNITIES FOR ICT ICT can be used in a number of different ways throughout this unit. For example, the resource Google Earth could be used to locate Coll in the Inner Hebrides and track the journey from there to Chalvey. Lots of websites available to support work Many resources available as power points for whole class teaching INCLUSION / PSHE/CITIZENSHIP/ SPIRITUAL, MORAL, SOCIAL AND CULTURAL LINKS Children could be encouraged to think about how their lives would be different if they lived in a place like Struay. INVESTIGATION This unit of work relies on children developing the enquiry skills, asking questions and comparing two localities. Any investigation work will occur through discussions with other pupils, and will involve the children looking at different sources of information and making judgements LINKS WITH LITERACY, NUMERACY, SCIENCE There is an obvious link to be made with Literacy, as the focus for the unit is on the Katie Morag stories. However, links with Numeracy could be made, with work done on co-ordinates, position and direction. CREATIVITY –PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES DO YOU NEED A CP PARTNER IF SO EXAMPLE NATIONAL CURRICULUM PROGS OF STUDY Geog 1a, 1c, 1d Geog 2a, 2c, 2d, 2e Geog 3a, 3b, 3d Geog 6b DISPLAY Children will be involved in making maps of their own locality and that of Struay. They will also be required to make a collage of the different localities. This could make a lovely cross-curricular display, involving
