Draft Maintenance and Operations Personnel Descriptions 27 March 2006 Tier 0: MO South Pole System South Pole Test System (7.2 FTE) Tier 0 Lead (.75 FTE) Darryn Schneider provides management oversight for the South Pole computing systems, including the test system, the Data Warehouse, core HPC and distributed computing, Data Center core services, and network services. Winter Over Personnel (3 FTE) The surface computing system at the South is a significant computing cluster. Winter Over staff is required to have a wide range of skills, ranging from System and Network Administration, to general technical skills that enable them to follow directions carefully and precisely under direction from off station. They need to be mature and experienced to work independently and make considered judgment calls on what work is routine and what requires input from off site expertise. The mode of operation which has been working well is for each Winter Over to rotate through a week long shift of intensive monitoring of the detector. Thus, 1 week in each three is exclusively monitoring the performance of the detector. In the other 2 weeks less routine tasks are undertaken which best require uninterrupted periods of time. SPS and SPTS Operations (2 FTE) Paul Wisniewski maintains the South Pole computing system located at the South Pole, and the South Pole test system located at Chamberlin Hall. As well as Systems Administration, he ensures the systems are used in an appropriate manner, facilitates resource allocation, and coordination between users.? Paul also annually goes to the South Pole to upgrade and maintain the South Pole system.? He coordinates and implements the release of new software, ensuring it is first tested on the test system, and then installed in the correct manner on the South Pole system coordinating with software developers and experiment operators.
