Healthy water systems require water that is plentiful, clean and free of harmful contaminants. Water quality and quantity are critical for drinking water, fishing and swimming, and wildlife habitat. Sixty per cent of the lakes, streams, rivers, and marine waters that have been in assessed in Massachusetts are impaired by a wide variety of pollutant sources including wastewater treatment plant discharges, sanitary sewer overflows, combined sewer overflows, septic systems, physical alterations, and stormwater discharges. Communities with aging infrastructure may have inadequate treatment plants, leaky sewer pipes, hydraulic deficiencies in their collection system, illicit connections of stormwater conveyances to the sanitary sewer system and illicit connections of sanitary discharges to the stormwater system.
