Part I The Why and What of Debate Many people who have mastered the grammar and vocabulary in English but find it difficult to make their voices heard when mixing with foreigners. Learning how to debate is essential to language learners. 1. Why Debate? Children are encouraged to ask “why” in the west. Their parents will always give satisfactory answers to the questions unlike people in China only say “because I said so”. Western culture demands that statements must be substantiated, reasonable and convincing. A.
