The Early Life of Paul Pinot de Moira:- He was born on 26 December 1740 in the rural parish of Vindelle, near the town of Angoulême (present day Departement de Charente). He was born into a bourgeois family, the son of Monisur Jean Pinot (subdélégué de Monsieur l’Intendant de la Généralité de Limoges, Sieur de Moira, notaire-royal) and his second wife dame Fran?oise Gauvry. Paul was baptised on 1 January 1741, in eglise de Saint-Christophe at Vindelle by the curé of the parish. His godparents were Monsieur Paul Pinot (De Laulerie) (avocat au parlement) and Madame Francoise Martin (wife of Mr (Pierre) de Valleteau, Ecuyer, Seigneur de Mouillac, the former vice-senechal and mayor of the nearby town of Angoulême: this was his great-uncle). Many surviving documents refer to him as “Paul Pinot”, but he often added the particule “de Moira” - such as at his daughter’s baptism in 1772 where he was described as “Mr Paul Pinot de Moirat”; in the acte de decés for his daughter in 1809 where he was described as “Sieur Paul Pinot de Moira”; and on the cover of a notebook containing a series of essays (written by him after 1789), where he used the spelling “Pinot de Moira”. At the baptisms of his twin-daughters in 1773 he was described as “Monsieur Paul Pinot, Sieur de Masuargne” (presumably a mis-spelling by the priest of Moira). Paul’s family had strong links to the regional administrative and tax-raising bureaucracy run by the Intendant de la Généralité de Limoges: his father having worked for the Intendant as a sub-délégué (a deputy to the Intendant), and his brother and father-in-law both having at different times served as secretary to the Intendant. In 1761 an ambitious and clever new Intendant arrived at Limoges, named Jacques Turgot, Baron de Laune.
