Ethnography Workshop How to Analyze Transcripts, Build Models, and Conduct Interviews Co-Organized by: Keith V Bletzer, Ann Millard and Isidore Flores Continuing Education Institute (CEI) #1010.0 November 4, 2006 Saturday Boston, MA 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM American Public Health Association Annual Meeting Ethnography is a qualitative approach to study people scientifically through what is called “participant observation.” It generally entails: fieldwork in settings that may be inaccessible to other methods; interacting with people in everyday situations, as they go about their daily lives; systematic collection of data on what people say and do, using specific methods; description and analysis that seeks to follow “style” and “voice” of the community, that is, expressing how people speak/act and how they view the world Ethnography as Process ┬ Entry Contacts… Collect Data in the field activate strategy to answer research Q conduct interviews develop Field Notes sort, structure cross-check (verify) data Confidentiality and Human Subjects Narrative = Narrative is a spoken or written sequence where one statement chronologically or logically follows another, such as, “She spoke, he replied.” = Narrative Analysts work with taped interviews (conversation) and they work with written text. = Knowing how narrative is structured is useful in coding a transcript. = Report is a basic “factual” statement. Report versus Narrative “We had a cat. Our cat liked pancakes.” “We had a cat. That cat sure was feisty.
