The conventional approach is to add passive oil dampers transverse to the cable. However, the damping added with such an approach is limited when the damper is close to the cable-deck anchorage (damping ratio is about xd?/?2L where xd is the?distance between the damper and the anchorage, and L is the cable length). For long-span cable-stayed bridges, achieving even 1% damping may be infeasible without significant changes to bridge aesthetics. Using a smart damper, a controllable passive device such as a variable-orifice damper or magnetorheological fluid damper, significant additional damping may?be added.
