Cultural Differences: 东方 West But before we start… It is true that differences exist between cultures, including China and the U.S. However, let’s not think of these aspects as Black and White or as opposites. Comparing Cultures We truly have a global society. World trade and technology link us. You don’t have to like aspects of other cultures, but you must try to understand and appreciate these differences. Stereotypes and Sweeping generalizations are dangerous and negligent. Exercise critical thinking skills Get rid of binary, black/white ideas Life exists “in the gray” Avoid using frequency words like all, always, none, all the time I hear all Americans… Consider words like some, from time to time, occasionally, it’s possible that, etc. Media Sources Where did you get the information? T.V.? News? Movie? Word of mouth? The mass media reflects society Life is not any of the American television shows you watch, it merely reflects Person-to-person information should be considered too. Ask the question Why? Puts you in the right mind to compare. You acquire more info about people’s behavior to make a better judgment. Helps understand and appreciate why cultures are different.
