English Slang Abstract: Once slang was defined as vulgar” or illegitimate language, because it was mainly the language employed by people of low social status. But today, it has not only accepted by all kinds of people, but also has become an indispensable part of modern English. Slang mostly come from sub-culture, essentially not respected enough to enter into formal, written English. It reflects all facets of modern life, and it is widely used by varies people in society. Slang is a complex language phenomenon, and it is different from the standard language. It is concise, vivid, lively, humorous and free style, so it can help people understand the language and culture of western countries. But it is a great pity that there is not any book in China now, which presents a systematic study on slang. This paper is intended to make a study on the definition and origin of slang. Meanwhile, it analyzes the four basic characteristics of slang. These characteristics are useful to people to understand more about slang, and know the culture and background of western countries.
