How to improve the traffic flow of highway and fully utilise it becomes a serious problem. We transform the problemof improvinghighway traffic flow into a problem which is relevant to speed by using some formulas.Then we use the cellular automata model to simulating the speed of cars during running on the highway, fromwhich we derived the study of the average speed of the freeway segment. At first, we established a not overtaking lane model based on the NS model and arrive at the average speed of the expressway through simulation. Secondly, in accordance with the meaning of the questions the two-lane overtaking model was be established, which is based on CA model.Under certain conditions, by comparing the model one and the model two, we found that when certain conditions are reached, the model one is better than the model two. Therefore, we ameliorate the model, then obtaining an average velocity and the mean square value of the improved scheme by simulation program . In order to further contrasting the improved scheme with the former model, we also counted the number of each cell’s overtaking times , under two kinds of road load, both freeway overtaking each cells load. Our approach will be extended to the prevailing principle leftmost. By observing the density of path trajectory, we found that the prevailing principle leftmost in the simulation will not affect the index valu
