Improving End-User Efficiency Using the SmartEmpire IR System

Improving End-User Efficiency Using the Smart/Empire IR System Chris Buckley*, Claire Cardie** Scott Mardis**, Mandar Mitra**, David Pierce**, Kiri Wagstaff**, Janet Walz* Sabir Research*, Gaithersburg, MD Cornell University**, Department of Computer Science, Ithaca, NY 1 Introduction The primary goal of the Cornell/Sabir TIPSTER Phase III project was to develop techniques to improve the end-user efficiency of information retrieval (IR) systems. We focused our investigations in four related research areas: 1. High Precision Information Retrieval. The goal of our research in this area is to increase the accuracy of the set of documents given to the user. 2. Near-Duplicate Detection. The goal of our work in near-duplicate detection is to develop methods for delineating or removing from the set of retrieved documents any information that the user has already seen. 3. Context-Dependent Document Summarization. Here our goal is to provide for each document a short summary that includes only those portions of the document relevant to the query. 4. Context-Dependent Multi–Document Summarization. The goal of our research in this area is to provide a short summary for an entire group of related documents that includes only query-related portions. Taken as a whole, our research aims to increase end-user efficiency in each of the above tasks by reducing the amount of text that the user must peruse in order to obtain the desired useful information. We attack each task through a combination of statistical and linguistic approaches. The proposed statis- tical approaches extend existing methods in IR by performing computations within the context of another query or document. The proposed linguistic approaches build on existing work in information extraction and rely on a new technique for trainable partial parsing. In short, our integrated approach uses both sta- tistical and linguistic sources to identify selected relationships among important terms in a query or text. 1 The relat
