ADVANCES IN ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCES, VOL. 30, NO. 2, 2013, 306–314 Dynamic Linkage between the North Pacific and the Tropical Pacific: Atmosphere–Ocean Coupling LI Chun?(李 春) and WU Lixin (吴立新) Physical Oceanography Laboratory Key Laboratory of Ocean-Atmosphere Interaction and Climate in Universities of Shandong, Ocean University of China, Qingdao 266100 (Received 8 February 2012; revised 1 May 2012) ABSTRACT In this study, dynamic linkage of atmosphere–ocean coupling between the North Pacific and the tropical Pacific was demonstrated using a large number of ensemble perturbed initial condition experiments in a fully coupled fast ocean-atmosphere model (FOAM). In the FOAM model, an idealized mixed layer warming was initiated in the Kuroshio-Oyashio extension region, while the ocean and atmosphere remained fully coupled both locally and elsewhere. The modeling results show that the warm anomalies are associated with anomalous cyclonic winds, which induce initial warming anomalies extending downstream in the following winter. Then, the downstream warming spreads southwestward and induces SST warming in the equatorial Pacific via surface wind-evaporation-SST feedback. Warming in the tropical Pacific is further reinforced by Bjerknes’ feedback. Introduction In the tropical Pacific, the atmosphere-ocean cou- pled system as well as its variation (e.g., ENSO) ex- erts powerful control over global weather and climate, including that of the North Pacific (see the review by Alexander et al., 2002). Observations and mod- eling simulations have shown that North Pacific cli- mate variability can also influence the tropical Pacific through both an atmospheric br
