It was the first time she had ever left her motherland. 这是她第一次离开自己的祖国。 句中的 It was the first time (that) ... 意为“这是第一次……”, that 引导的是定语从句, 从句通常用过去完成时, that可以省略。此外，在 It is the first time (that) ...中, 从句通常用现在完成时。此句型中的 first 也可以是 second / third ...。;e.g. It is the first time that he has been to Beijing. 这是他第一次去北京。 The teacher criticized him, because it was the second time he had made the same mistake. 老师批评了他, 因为这是他第二次犯同样的错误。;Yesterday I made a speech for the students.
