Lanzhou Veterinary R ωearch Institute, Chinese Academy 01Agriculture sciences,lanzhou, 730046, china) Abstlact : A baby hamster kidney cell line(BHK-21) infected by Foot-αnd- mouth disease virus (OGBFI5 strain) was treated with N民CL then the cells survived were selected and cloned. 32 positive-cloned cell strains were obtained. One strain (BHK-ROp) was randomly selected and subcul- tured as usual and analysed with RT-PCR, transmission electron microscope and flow cytometry. The results demonstrated that the 4th, 16th, 36th generation BHK-ROp cell still harboured FMDV which had no changes on the growth featmes of the cells. They had the radical characteristics of viral persistent infection.
