Theanimalsweredesignatedascontrolgroup(groupI),3,3’,5- Triiodo- -Thyronine (T ) injected group (group II) and T + melatonin L injectedgroup(groupIII).Attheendofstudy,tissuespecimenswere 3 3 examinedforchangesinstructure.IntheT injectedgroup,dilatationin 3 sinusoidsandpalecytoplasmwereobserved,aswellasanincreased numberoftheKupffercellsandanincreasedamountofglycogen.InT3 +melatonininjectedgroup,theamountofglycogenwassimilartothe T3 injected groups while the number of Kupffer cells increased but sinusoidlargenessandhepatocytestructureweresimilartothecontrol. OnelectronmicroscopicexaminationthemitochondriaofT injected 3 group were slightly larger than those of the control group. In T + 3 melatonin injected group enlargement in the spaces of Disse, increasednumberoflipidvacuolesofItocellsandincreasednumberof microvilliofhepatocyteswereobserved.Kupffercellsweremoreactive inthisgroup. TheresultsofthisstudyindicatethatT injectioncausesstructural 3 changes in the liver, and melatonin hormone has a small, if any, protectiveeffectontheliverofratswithhyperthyroid.
