Butter wouldn’t melt 黄油都不会融化 ;当然，butter wouldnt melt in her mouth和“自清凉无汗”一样，只是一个错觉。 从前，这句英文成语大概有赞美含义，赞美少女天真无邪的样子； 可是，成语意思渐渐改变，现在可以兼言男女，说他们“一副正经模样，但是--”那“但是”后面当然就是批评的话了， ;e.g.: He looks as if butter wouldnt melt in his mouth, but I’m convinced he is behind all this. 他看来十分老实，但是，我深信这一切都是他挑起的。;2. Give somebody the benefit of the doubt 既有怀疑，利归被告 ;在西方，法庭假如没有充分证据证实被告有罪，那么，为免制造冤狱，实行宁纵毋枉，被告得判无罪， 这叫做give somebody the benefit of the doubt， 直译是“既有疑点，利归某人(被告)”。现在，这句法律用语往往给引用到其他场合，意思是“对人家的怀疑既然未能证实，且往好的一面想”。 ;e.g.: There is no evidence that the cat killed the canary while we were away. Lets therefore give him the benefit of the doubt. 没有证据显示猫儿趁我们不在的时 候，搏杀了金丝雀；所以，不宜卤 莽断定是牠杀的。 ;3. Lip-service 嘴唇做礼拜 ;按lip-service一词源自十七世纪，本来是指那些上教堂 做礼拜(attend service)的人，祈祷时只是嘴唇(lips)微 动，机械似的背诵祷文，完全不思考祷文含义。后 来，人们就用lip-service一词来说毫无诚意的口惠， 往往和pay这个动词连用， ;e.g.: Enchanted by the business opportunities the cheater promised them, the seven Henans only pay lip-service to the investment in the mansion-building project. 这几位河南人被骗子答应给他们的做生意机会迷住 了，只是口头上表示会投资这个大厦建设项目。; ----------------------The End -----------------------
