CurcumazedoariabelongingtothefamilyZingiberaceaehasbeenusedinthetraditionalsystemofmedicineinIndiaandSouthwest Asiaintreatingmanyhumanailmentsandisfoundtopossessmanybiologicalactivities.Therationaleofthepresentstudywasto isolate,identify,andcharacterizeantitumourprinciplesfromtherhizomesofCurcumazedoaria,toassessitscytotoxice?ectson humanandmurinecancercells,todetermineitsapoptosisinducingcapacityincancercells,andtoevaluateitstumourreducing propertiesininvivomicemodels.Isocurcumenolwascharacterizedastheactivecompoundbyspectroscopyandwasfoundto inhibittheproliferationofcancercellswithoutinducingsigni?canttoxicitytothenormalcells.Fluorescentstainingexhibitedthe morphologicalfeaturesofapoptosisinthecompound-treatedcancercells.Invivotumourreductionstudiesrevealedthatadoseof 35.7mg/kgbodyweightsigni?cantlyreducedtheascitictumourinDLA-challengedmiceandincreasedthelifespanwithrespect tountreatedcontrolmice. 1.Introduction for human consumption, these species are excellent can- didates for development of novel chemotherapeutics [15]. Traditionally,curcumadrugscalled“Ukon”and“Gajutsu”in Japanesehavebeenusedinoketsusy
