Theidenti?cationofbarrierstophysicalactivityandexercisehasbeenusedformanydecadestoexplainexercisebehaviorinolder adults.Typicallyhealthconcernsarethenumberonebarriertoparticipation.DatafromCCHS-HAdataset(N =20,875)were usedtogenerateasampleofCanadians,60+years,whodidnotidentifyahealthconditionlimitation,illness,orinjuryasabarrier toparticipationinphysicalactivity(n = 4,900)makingthisdatasetuniqueintermsofthestudyofbarrierstoparticipation. Whilethevastmajorityofolderadultsparticipatedinphysicalactivity,9.4%didnot.Therelationshipsbetweennonparticipation, barriers,self-reportedhealthstatus,andchronichealthconditionsweredeterminedusingbinarylogisticregression.Themain ?ndingssuggestthattraditionalbarriersandself-reportedhealthstatusarenotresponsiblefornonparticipation.Nonparticipation wasbestpredictedbychronichealthconditionssuggestingadisconnectbetweenself-reportedhealthstatusandunderlyinghealth conditions.Thedataareclearinsuggestingthatbarriersarenotthelimitingfactorandphysicalactivityprogrammingmustbe focusedonmeetingthehealthneedsofouragingpopulation. 1.Introduction C+forparticipationinphysicalactivity,with62%ofseniors beinginactive.
