Introduction.Mitochondrialdamageanddisruptioninoxidativephosphorylationcontributestothepathogenesisofalcoholicliver injury.Herein,wetestedthehypothesisthatthehepatoprotectiveactionsofbetaineagainstalcoholicliverinjuryoccuratthelevel ofthemitochondrialproteome.Methods.MaleWisterratswerepair-fedcontrolorethanol-containingliquiddietssupplemented withorwithoutbetaine(10mg/mL)for4-5wks.Liverwasexaminedfortriglycerideaccumulation,levelsofmethioninecycle metabolites,andalterationsinmitochondrialproteins.Results.Chronicethanolingestionresultedintriglycerideaccumulation whichwasattenuatedintheethanolplusbetainegroup.Bluenativegelelectrophoresis(BN)revealedsigni?cantdecreasesin thecontentoftheintactoxidativephosphorylationcomplexesinmitochondriafromethanol-fedanimals.Thealcohol-dependent lossinmanyofthelowmolecularweightoxidativephosph
