Background.Acupuncture hasbeen reported to a?ectthe humanautonomicsystem.Withinthis pilotstudy, teleacupuncture between China andAustria is used forthe ?rsttime forquantifying the e?ects of heart rate variability (HRV) in poststroke rehabilitation.Methods.In29Chinesepost-strokepatients(15f,14m;meanage ± SD64.7± 11.3years;range40–80years) electrocardiographicsignalsbefore,during,andafteracupunctureattheacupointTongli(HT5)wererecordedinHarbinand analyzedinGrazusingteleacupunctureviainternet.HRVdatawereanalyzedinthetimeandfrequencydomain,andaprotocol fromAustriawassenttotheteaminChinaimmediatelyafterthetreatmentandrecordingsession.Results.Acupuncturedoesnot changeheartrateinthepost-strokepatients;however,totalHRVincreasedsigni?cantly(P.05)duringand5–10minutesafter acupuncture.Inaddition,balancebetweensympatheticandparasympatheticactivity(lowfrequency/highfrequencyHRVratio) changesmarkedlyduringtreatment.Conclusions.BasedoninnovativeHRVanalysis,itcouldbedemonstratedthatteleacupuncture betweenChina/HarbinandAustria/G
