Celladhesionmoleculesplayasigni?cantroleincancerprogressionandmetastasis.Cell-cellinteractionsofcancercellswith endotheliumdeterminethemetastaticspread.Inaddition,directtumorcellinteractionswithplatelets,leukocytes,andsoluble componentssigni?cantlycontributetocancercelladhesion,extravasation,andtheestablishmentofmetastaticlesions.Clinical evidenceindicatesthatheparin,commonlyusedfortreatmentofthromboemboliceventsincancerpatients,isbene?cialfortheir survival.Preclinicalstudiescon?rmthatheparinpossessesantimetastaticactivitiesthatleadtoattenuationofmetastasisinvarious animalmodels.Heparincontainsseveralbiologicalactivitiesthatmaya?ectseveralstepsinmetastaticcascade.Herewefocuson theroleofcellularadhesionreceptorsinthemetastaticcascadeanddiscussevidenceforheparinasaninhibitorofcelladhesion. WhileP-andL-selectinfacilitationofcellularcontactsduringhematogenousmetastasisisbeingacceptedasapotentialtargetof heparin,hereweproposethatheparinmayalsointerferewithintegrinactivityandtherebya?ectcancerprogression.Thisreview summarizesrecent?ndingsaboutpotentialmechanismsoftumorcellinteractionsinthevasculatureandantimetastaticactivities ofheparin. 1.Introduction thatenablesth
