Earthworms are usually assumed to enhance plant growth through di?erent mechanisms which are now clearly identi?ed. It ishoweverdi?culttodeterminetheirrelativeimportance,andtopredictapriorithestrengthanddirectionofthee?ectsof agivenearthwormspeciesonagivenplant.Soilpropertiesarelikelytobeveryin?uentialindeterminingplantresponsesto earthworm activities. They are likely to change the relative strength of the various mechanisms involved in plant-earthworm interactions.Inthispaper,wereviewthedi?erentrationalesusedtoexplainchangesinearthworme?ectduetosoiltype.Then,we systematicallydiscussthee?ectofmainsoilcharacteristics(soiltexture,OM,andnutrientcontents)onthedi?erentmechanisms allowingearthwormtoin?uenceplantgrowth.Finally,weidentifythemainshortcomingsinourknowledgeandpointoutthenew experimentalandmeta-analyticalapproachesthatneedtobedeveloped.Anexampleofsuchameta-analysisisgivenandmeans togofurtheraresuggested.Theresulthighligh
