Theabilityofhumanpluripotentstemcellstodi?erentiatetowardsthecardiaclineagehasattractedsigni?cantinterest,initially withastrongfocusonregenerativemedicine.Theultimategoaltorepairtheheartbycardiomyocytereplacementhas,however, provenchallenging.Humancardiacdi?erentiationhasbeendi?culttocontrol,butmethodsareimproving,andtheprocess, to a certain extent, can be manipulated and directed. The stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes described to date exhibit rather immaturefunctionalandstructuralcharacteristicscomparedtoadultcardiomyocytes.Thus,afuturechallengewillbetodevelop strategiestoreachahigherdegreeofcardiomyocytematurationinvitro,toisolatecardiomyocytesfromtheheterogeneouspoolof di?erentiatingcells,aswellastoguidethedi?erentiationintothedesiredsubtype,thatis,ventricular,atrial,andpacemakercells.In thispaper,wewilldiscussthestrategiesforthegenerationofcardiomyocytesfrompluripotentstemcellsandtheircharacteristics, aswellashighlightsomeapplicationsforthecells. 1.Introduction [3, 4].
