This paper considers broadband signal transmission and statistical performance properties of high-voltage/broadband over powerlines(HV/BPL)channelsassociatedwithoverheadpowertransmission.TheoverheadHV/BPLtransmissionchannelis investigatedwithregardtoitsspectralbehavior,itsend-to-endsignalattenuation,anditsstatisticalperformancemetrics.Itis foundthattheabovefeaturesdependcriticallyonthefrequency,theoverheadHVpowergridtype(150kV,275kV,or400kVand single-ordouble-circuit),thecouplingschemeapplied,thephysicalpropertiesofthecablesused,theMTLcon?guration,and thetypeofbranchesexistingalongtheend-to-endBPLsignalpropagation.Thecontributionofthispaperisthreefold.First,the signi?cantbroadbandtransmissionpotentialofoverheadHVlinesisrevealed.Theresultsdemonstratethat,regardlessofoverhead HVpowergridtype,theoverheadHVgridisapotentiallyexcellentcommunicationsmedium,o?eringlow-losscharacteristics, ?at-fading features, and low multipath dispersion over a 25km repeater span well beyond 100MHz.
