MethodsandFindings:Participants(n=1,686)wereenrolledinChicago,LosAngeles,NewYorkCity,andSanFranciscoand randomized to a cognitive-behavioral intervention or attention-control comparison. The nonrandomized group received standardHIVcounselingandtesting.Interventiongroupparticipantsreceivedsix2-hgroupsessionsfocusedonreducing substanceuseandsexualriskbehavior.Attention-controlgroupparticipantsreceivedsix2-hgroupsessionsofvideosand discussionofMSMcommunityissuesunrelatedtosubstanceuse,sexualrisk,andHIV/AIDS.AllthreegroupsreceivedHIV counselingandtestingatbaseline.Thesamplereportedhigh-riskbehaviorduringthepast3mopriortotheirbaselinevisit: 67%reportedunprotectedanalsex,and77%reportedsubstanceuseduringtheirmostrecentanalsexencounterwitha nonprimarypartner.Thethreegroupssignificantly(p,0.05)reducedriskbehavior(e.g.,unprotectedanalsexreducedby 32%at12-mofollow-up),butwerenotdifferent(p.0.05)f
