Greifswald, Germany, 3InstituteofDiagnostics,RadiologyandNeuroradiology,GreifswaldUniversity,Greifswald,Germany Abstract Background:Artifactscausedbydentalrestorations,suchasdentalcrowns,dentalfillingsandorthodonticappliances,area commonprobleminMRIandCTscansoftheheadandneck.Theaimofthisin-vitrostudywastoidentifyandevaluatethe artifactsproducedbydifferentdentalrestorationmaterialsinCTandMRIimages. Methods:Testsamplesof44materials(MetalandNon-Metal)commonlyusedindentalrestorationswerefabricatedand embeddedwithreferencespecimensingelatinmoulds.MRIimagingof1.5TandCTscanwereperformedonthesamples andevaluatedintwodimensions.Artifactsizeanddistortionsweremeasuredusingadigitalimageanalysissoftware. Results: In MRI, 13 out of 44 materials produced artifacts, while in CT 41 out of 44 materials showed artifacts. Artifacts producedinbothMRIandCTimageswerecategorizedaccordingtothesizeoftheartifact. Significance: Metal based restoration materials had strong influence on CT and less artifacts in MRI images. Rare earth elementssuchasYtterbiumtrifluoridefoundincompositescausedartifactsinbothMRIandCT.Recognizingthesefindings wouldhelpdentalmaterialsmanufacturersanddeveloperstoproducematerialswhichcancauselessartifactsinMRIand CTimages.
