This is due to the outstandingplantdiversitythattheyfeeduponandtheinherentdifficultiesinvolvedinobservingtheirelusivebehaviour. Classically, the dietof elusivetropical herbivores is studied through theobservation of browsing signs andmacroscopic analysisoffaecesorstomachcontents.Inthisstudy,weillustratethattheoriginalcouplingofclassicmethodswithgenetic andethnobotanicalapproachesyieldsinformationbothaboutthedietdiversity,theforagingmodalitiesandthepotential impactonvegetationofthelargestterrestrialmammalofAmazonia,thelowlandtapir.Thestudywasconductedinthe Guiananshield,wheretheecologyoftapirshasbeenlessinvestigated.Weidentified92newspecies,51newgeneraand13 new families of plants eaten by tapirs. We discuss the relative contribution of our different approaches, notably the contributionofgeneticbarcoding,usedforthefirsttimetoinvestigatethedietofalargetropicalmammal,andhowlocal traditionalecologicalknowledgeisaccreditedandvaluableforresearchontheecologyofelusiveanimals.
