DynamicalModelingofCollectiveBehaviorfromPigeon FlightData:FlockCohesionandDispersion GracianoDieckKattas1{,Xiao-KeXu1,2*,MichaelSmall1,3 * 1Department of Electronic and Information Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hung Hom, Kowloon, Hong Kong, 2School of Communication and ElectronicEngineering,QingdaoTechnologicalUniversity,Qingdao,China,3SchoolofMathematicsandStatistics,UniversityofWesternAustralia,Crawley,Australia Abstract Severalmodelsofflockinghavebeenpromotedbasedonsimulationswithqualitativelynaturalisticbehavior.Inthispaperwe providethefirstdirectapplicationofcomputationalmodelingmethodstoinferflockingbehaviorfromexperimentalfielddata.We showthatthisapproachisabletoinfergeneralrulesforinteraction,orlackofinteraction,amongmembersofaflockor,more generally,anycommunity.Usingexperimentalfieldmeasurementsofhomingpigeonsinflightwedemonstratetheexistenceofa basic distance dependent attraction/repulsion relationship and show that this rule is sufficient to explain collective behavior observedin nature.Positionaldata ofindividualsovertime areusedas inputdata toa computational algorithm capableof building complex nonlinear functions that can represent the system behavior. Topological nearest neighbor interactions are consideredtocharacterizethecomponentswithinthismodel.Theefficacyofthismethodisdemonstratedwithsimulatednoisy datageneratedfromtheclassical(twodimensional)Vicsekmodel.Whenappliedtoexperimentaldatafromhomingpigeonflights weshowthatthemorecomplexthreedimensionalmodelsarecapableofsimulatingtrajectories,aswellasexhibitingrealistic collectivedynamics.Thesimulationsofthereconstructedmodelsareusedtoextractpropertiesofthecollectivebehaviorin pigeons,andhowitisaffectedbychangingtheinitialconditionsofthesystem.Ourresultsdemonstratethatthisapproachmaybe appliedtoconstructmodelscapableofsimulatingtrajectoriesandcollectivedynamicsusingexperimentalfieldmeasurementsof herdmovement.Fromthesemodels,thebehavioroftheindividualagents(animals)maybeinferr
