Although severalstudieslinkadultsocialbondstofitness,socialpatternsandrelationshipsareoftenformedearlyinlifeandarealso likelytohavefitnessconsequences,particularlyinspecieswithlengthydevelopmentalperiods,extensivesociallearning, andearlysocialbond-formation.Inalongitudinalstudyofbottlenosedolphins(Tursiopssp.),calfsocialnetworkstructure, specificallythemetriceigenvectorcentrality,predictedjuvenilesurvivalinmales.Additionally,malecalvesthatdiedpost- weaninghadstrongertiestojuvenilemalesthansurvivingmalecalves,suggestingthatjuvenilemalesimposefitnesscosts ontheiryoungercounterparts.Ourstudyindicatesthatselectionisactingonsocialtraitsearlyinlifeandhighlightsthe needtoexaminethecostsandbenefitsofsocialbondsduringformativelifehistorystages.
