Abstract
Background:Sofar,manystudieshaveinvestigatedthedistributionofCCR5genotypebetweenHIV-1infectedpatientsand
uninfected people. However, no definite results have been put forward about whether heterozygosity for a 32-basepair
deletioninCCR5gene(CCR5-D32)canaffectHIV-1susceptibility.
Methods: We performed a meta-analysis of 18 studies including more than 12000 subjects for whom the CCR5-D32
polymorphismwasgenotyped.Oddsratio(OR)with95%confidenceinterval(CI)wereemployedtoassesstheassociation
ofCCR5-D32polymorphismwithHIV-1susceptibility.
Results:Comparedwiththewild-typeCCR5homozygotes,thepooledORforCCR5-D32heterozygoteswas1.02(95%CI,
0.88–1.19)forhealthycontrols(HC)and0.95(95%CI,0.71–1.26)forexposeduninfected(EU)controls.Similarresultswere
foundinstratifiedanalysisbyethnicity,samplesizeandmethodofCCR5-D32genotyping.
Conclusions:Themeta-analysisindicatedthatHIV-1susceptibilityisnotsignificantlyaffectedbyheterozygosityforCCR5-
D32.
