Autonomic(heartrateandskinconductance)andsomatic(eyeblink)responsestoacousticstartleprobesweremeasured duringapre-stressbaseline,duringathreeminutesstressintervention,andduringthesubsequentrecoveryperiod.Startle skinconductanceandheartrateresponseswerefacilitatedduringstress.Comparedtobaseline,startleeyeblinkresponses werenotaffectedduringtheinterventionbutwerediminishedafterwards.Thesedatadescribeanewanduniquestartle responsepatternduringstress:facilitationofautonomicstressresponsesbutnosuchfacilitationofsomaticstartleeyeblink responses. The absence of an effect of stress on startle eye blink responsiveness may illustrate the importance of guaranteeinguninterruptedvisualinputduringperiodsofstress.
