The aim of the study was to evaluate its effects in neonatally streptozotocin (STZ)- induceddiabeticrats(n-STZdiabeticrats). MethodologyandPrincipalFindings:Toinducediabetes,STZ(90mg/kg)wasadministeredintraperitoneallyto2-day-old malepups.When12weeksold,diabeticratswererandomizedintosleeveoperationgroup(SLG,n=6)andshamoperation group(SOG,n=6).Bodyweightsweremonitoredweekly,anddailyconsumptionofwaterandfoodwerefollowedforeight consecutiveweekspostoperatively.Serumglucoselevelsweremeasuredperiodicallyatthe4thand8thweekaftersurgery. Insulin, ghrelin, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) levels were assayedattheendofthestudy.OurdatashowedthatSLGratsexhibitedsignificantlylowerbodyweightgaininadditionto reducedfoodandwaterintakespostoperatively comparedtotheirsham-operationcounterparts. However,resolutionof diabeteswasnotobservedinourstudy.Correspondingly,therewerenosignificantdifferencesbetweenSOGratsandSLG rats in glucose metabolism-associated hormones, including insulin, GIP and GLP-1. In contrast, ghrelin level significantly decreased(P,0.01)inSLGgroup(58.0163.75pg/ml)afterSGsurgerycomparedtoSOGgroup(76.3663.51pg/ml). Conclusions: These observations strongly suggest that SG is effective in controlling body weight. However, SG did not achieveresolutionorimprovementofdiabetesinn-STZdiabeticrats.
